Many soccer lovers around the world are very excited because what they've been waiting for is coming. It is World Cup time.
Getting a World Cup champion is a long process that will finish this summer. For the past three years teams around the world have been playing each other for World Cup points. Those who got the most points get to go to the World Cup finals.
Thirty-two teams qualified. Those thirty-two teams are in eight groups with four teams in each group. Every team of a group will play with each other and the top two of each group will go to the next round. There will be only sixteen teams left. These sixteen teams are going to make four groups of four teams.
The teams in each group are going to play with each other and the top two will advance to the next round. After all this happens there will be eight teams and two groups of four teams that will then make two groups of two. Each group is going to play 2 games. If in the first game team one wins and in the second game team two wins they will play a third game. They are going to do the same thing. The team has to win two games in order to go to the championship match. The losers will play for the third and fourth place.
The World Cup will be in France. It will start on June 10, 1998. The top eight teams are Brazil, Italy, France, Spain, Holland, Germany, Romania, and Argentina.
